The Rural-urban fringes are the outskirts of an urban area. These are used for recreational purposes by building parks and golf courses. It is an area of interface between a country side (village) and an urban area.

Early man chose the place of settlement based on the availability of water. Great civilisations like Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro flourished on the banks of river. Water is the basic source for leading a life because, apart from serving for drinking purpose, water is also required for cultivation.
