Place should possess supportive characteristics to act as an ideal place for settlement like good water facilities, favourable climatic conditions, good government policies, employment opportunities and transportation.

Isolated dwellings occupy the bottom position in hierarchical settlement based on the population size. These are the smallest human settlements. The whole settlement consists of only 1 or 2 households.

In a settlement which concentrates on agricultural economy, land plays an important factor affecting settlement. There should be proper distribution of land resources and also possess spatial structure suitable to agriculture.
