Trees keep the soil particles bound together. They have roots that extend deep in the soil. The roots of trees hold the soil particles tightly together and prevent their erosion and washing away due to factors like wind, water, rains etc.

Loss of the top layer of soil is called soil erosion. it is due to a variety of factors like rapidly flowing wind, water etc. 

Roots of trees hold the soil particles and prevent their loss. When trees are cut on a large scale land becomes barren. This results in the loss of upper soil layer due to heavy wind or flowing water leading to soil erosion. Hence afforestation prevents soil erosion. Thus the correct answer is option A.
