The term Aryan means ‘Nobel’ by word. There are many statements which talk about origin of Aryans. Most common and accepted one is that the Aryans are Iranians who settled in India. Period of settlement of Aryans in India is 2000-1500 BC.

People of urban areas follow compact form of settlement. This is due to increased settlement in urban areas. In such type of settlement houses, shops, hospitals etc. are closely located and packed. People face problems of overcrowding and suffocation in such type of settlements.

According to population size, a hamlet occupies next higher position to the isolated dwellings. A hamlet has a tiny population of less than 100 and very few (if any) services, and few buildings. A hamlet is smaller than village.

Early man chose the place of settlement based on the availability of water. The early urban settlement in India is Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro. Great civilisations like Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro flourished on the banks of river. This civilisation flourished on the banks of river Indus.

Process of developing towns and making an area more urban is called urbanisation. Though urbanisation resulted in increased comfort and luxury of people, it also caused negative effects like congestion or crowding due to increased informal human settlement in urban areas, power blackouts etc.

People who choose temporary settlements are called Nomads. He is a person who changes his place of living from time to time mostly in search of new pastures for his livestock.

Calcutta is not an example of India's ancient town. This is because there is no ancient history associated with the state. Its history is associated and is limited only to the Britisher's time. Calcutta was the capital of British India. It was famous for its river port for trade and commerce with the rest of the world. Further, if we talk about Prayagraj, Patliputra, and Varanasi, these states have an ancient history. 

A place where one inhabits or establishes a community to lead his life is called a settlement. Place should possess supportive characteristics to act as an ideal place for settlement like good water facilities, favourable climatic conditions, good government policies, employment opportunities and transportation.

People of urban settlement involve themselves mostly in business and manufacturing activities because it provides good opportunities to secondary and tertiary sectors.

Isolated dwellings occupy the bottom position in hierarchical settlement based on the population size. These are the smallest human settlements. The whole settlement consists of only 1 or 2 households.
